MEXICO – Donald Haines of Mexico was honored by the Legislature on June 15, marking his 97th birthday on Tuesday, June 17. State Rep. Sheryl J. Briggs presented Haines with a certificate at the First Baptist Church of Mexico, where he has been the organist for 85 years.

Said Briggs, “You have faithfully served your church and your community for many years So I introduced a bill to present you with official sentiments from the state of Maine.”

She then read the official proclamation, which was greeted by a standing ovation from the congregation. Haines also received cards and good wishes from his church family.

Haines began playing the organ at First Baptist at age 12, sharing the position with his mother. In due course, he became the resident organist. In all his years working at the local paper mill, Haines refused to work on Sundays, feeling his commitment came first.

For many years, Haines has been a guest at area nursing homes, taking his musical talent to residents. He has also taught and mentored a number of younger pianists and organists.

Though a confirmed bachelor, in the words of Briggs, “You have been a father figure to a great many people.”
