LEWISTON – A plaque was unveiled at Veterans Memorial Park recognizing, Joseph A.M. Paradis of Lewiston for his unselfish commitment and dedication in creating the park.

The park, formerly known as Heritage Park, was renamed by the city to honor local veterans.

Paradis, a Korean War prisoner of war and Purple Heart recipient, served in the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Infantry Regiment. He was seriously wounded in action by a missile and was captured as a prisoner of war. He later returned to military control.

The 8th Calvary Regiment was formed in 1866 at Camp Reynolds, Calif. During the Spanish American War in 1898, the regiment sailed to Cuba. They returned to the Philippines in 1910. When war broke out on the Korean peninsula, the regiment conducted the first amphibious landing of the Korean War and was the first unit to enter the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.

Prisoners of war are encouraging all veterans to share their stories in their communities across the country. The American Legion has also encouraged its members to record their stories through its History Project.

For additional information on the History Project, contact the Department of Maine, PO Box 900, Waterville, ME 04903.
