I’m sorry I missed the June 8 article “Eighth wonder of the world,” but I did not miss House Speaker Glenn Cummings’ keynote speech at the Poland Regional High School. It was my granddaughter’s graduation.
Apparently Wayne Cotterly of Poland Springs (letter June 14) wasn’t there to hear Cummings’ explanation of “take advantage of people, be losers and give away everything that is most precious.”
At most boring graduations, you hear the same overtures again and again, but Cummings’ opening statement got everyone’s attention. He then went on to qualify his opening remarks. For example, the loser he was referring to was Abraham Lincoln, who was a loser most of his young life, until he had the courage to follow his dreams.
Other explanations of his opening statement made the young graduates think about their futures and kept everyone’s attention.
I am neither a staunch Democrat nor Republican, but I do like to keep my ears open and listen to the rest of the story before I rush to judgment.
I hope Cummings is invited again next year.
