RANGELEY – The school budget referendum planned for Monday will be rescheduled and is likely to coincide with a selectman’s election, Town Manager Perry Ellsworth said Friday.
Because notice of the balloting was not posted seven days in advance, it had to be delayed.
On Thursday, a recount of votes for two positions on the Board of Selectmen revealed a tie between incumbent Robert Welch and candidate Gary Shaffer, Ellsworth said.
Final results were Dennis Marquis, 146 votes, Welch, 136 votes, Shaffer, 136 votes, and three write-in votes for Stephen Philbrick.
Shaffer requested the recount after initial results from the June 10 vote showed he had 135 and Welch 136 votes.
Donald Nuttall, Dennis Marquis and Jim Stone were present to observe Thursday’s recount, Ellsworth said.
While details were still being worked out Friday afternoon, a possible election date of June 30 is being considered for the referendum and election, he said.
The date would complete the business before the start of the town’s new fiscal year and give the town clerk time enough to post the election.
