AUBURN – Planners will begin writing a master plan for New Auburn with a public meeting Wednesday.

“Right now, we are soliciting as many people as we can to take part,” said Antje Kablitz, a consultant working with the city to create the plan.

City planning officials and consultants will host an organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sherwood Heights Elementary for people interested in taking part in writing the master plan. Organizers are hoping to find a core group of residents who will meet monthly to discuss planning issues and help write policies.

“Then, we’re hoping to collect e-mail addresses of people that are just interested in the progress,” Kablitz said. “We’ll e-mail regular updates, and that way people can be involved at what ever level they want.”

The plan will look at the economic situation, land use patterns and overall health of the area from the Androscoggin River west to the Little Androscoggin and south to Hackett Road.

“It’s an area a little bigger than the downtown core, but there will be a lot of focus on the downtown,” she said. “I think it will end up being a mixed bag of over-arching issues, from analysis of traffic patterns with a focus on economic development and a discussion of future land use issues.”

The final plan will be included as part of the city’s comprehensive plan, which is also being written.
