DIXFIELD – A two-mile stretch of construction on Route 2 just east of Canton Point Road has prompted many motorists to use Common Road as an alternate route.
That has caused some problems for people living along the country road, police Chief Richard Pickett said.
“The number of speeders on the Common Road has risen. The speed limit will be strictly enforced,” he said.
The speed limit at the eastern end of Common Road is 35 mph to the intersection with Meese Road. On the western end of Canton Point Road, the speed limit is 45 mph.
“We’re concerned for the safety of people,” Pickett said. “We have more patrols out there.”
He said residents of Common Road often walk along the narrow, winding road.
Also, said Pickett, fines will double along the two-mile construction site if drivers are caught speeding. The new speed limit, when no construction is under way on Route 2, is 40 mph. When contractors are working, that limit is reduced to 25 mph.
Both ends of Common Road are posted to ban trucks over 12 tons. Selectmen are holding a public hearing at 5 p.m. Monday to receive comment on banning trucks from using it as a through road.
“The road is too narrow,” the chief said.
