BETHEL – The Androscoggin River Source to the Sea Trek returns this summer with a full 20-day paddle.
According to a recent report, the Androscoggin River Watershed Council has been busy preparing for the trek, which is designed to help participants cruise all or parts of the river from Lake Umbagog in New Hampshire to Maine’s Popham Beach.
The trek starts on July 6 at the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge. Kayakers and canoeists can join for one day, several days, or take on the entire river, according to council spokesman Ferg Lea.
“This is a great opportunity to experience the amazing scenery and wildlife of the entire river valley and to become acquainted with sections of the river that you may not be familiar with,” Lea said.
The trek is free and open to all.
“Organizing the trek is a costly endeavor, so the watershed council is always looking for individual and business sponsors,” Lea said.
Shuttles for canoes will be provided each day, during which, brief presentations will be held on the historic and natural aspects of the Androscoggin River Valley.
Additionally, Lea said, canoes and kayaks can be rented at many places along the way. There are also campgrounds and other overnight accommodations along the trip.
