YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) – A city council in New York’s suburbs is taking up a resolution to ban a defunct power plant’s nickname: The Gates of Hell.
The Yonkers City Council resolution calls for the abandoned plant to be known in official documents by the formal name The Glenwood Power Station or by its address rather than by the hellacious nickname many community residents use.
The council is expected to vote Tuesday on banning The Gates of Hell name.
Council President Chuck Lesnick says he proposed the resolution after residents near the plant on the Hudson River complained the nickname smears their community. A councilwoman had used the nickname in a flier about a community meeting.
Local anti-violence advocates say the old power plant has been the site of gang activities. But police deny that.
