NORWAY – Germaine Daigle McCready Poirier left this world to enter her eternal home on June 23. For the past four years, she had been a resident of the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center. Prior to that, she resided for many years in Norway.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1909, in Lewiston, the daughter of Arthur and Osaima Boisvert Daigle. When she was very young her father died. Subsequently her mother married Harry McCready and he was the only father she ever knew. The family lived in Lewiston, Berlin, N.H., and finally in the Norway area. She attended parochial schools in Lewiston and Berlin, N.H.

It was in Norway in 1925, that she met her life partner, Harvey Poirier. Three years later, they were married and were together for almost 73 years, until his death in 2000. In addition, she was predeceased by her brother, Henry McCready; and an infant sister, Anita McCready.

She and Harvey made their home in the Norway-South Paris area except for a period during World War II, when he worked at the Portland shipyard and she was a store clerk there. Upon returning to Norway, they both worked in shoe shops or woodworking mills until their retirements.

She and Harvey were devoted members of St. Catherine of Sienna Parish in Norway, where they were involved in many service ministries. They were Sacristans for many years and each week she lovingly washed and pressed the altar linens. She was active with the St. Catherine Sodality of Catholic Women and was the special lady of the year in 2001.

They were not blessed with children of their own, but through their service to the church family and in the community they were parent-like to many.

She was a humble and deeply devoted servant to the Lord. She attended daily Mass until she was physically unable. Her dear friend, Ethel Lacourse and other parishioners brought her daily communion when she resided in the nursing home. Although her body was frail, her mind was clear and she continued to stay interested in the lives of her relatives and friends. She was frequently asked to pray for others because her faith was apparent to all who knew her.

She is survived by her niece, Anne McCready Bowen and husband, Frank, of Milton, Fla.; nephew, Michael McCready and wife, Tina, of Charleston, W.Va.; special nieces, Lena LeBlanc and husband, Rudy, of Portland and Theresa Burns and husband, Lee, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews and numerous grand and great-grandnieces and nephews.
