REDLANDS, Calif. – Dorothy Bird Doherty died June 20, at Redlands Community Hospital. She resided at Braswell’s Hampton Manor in Yucaipa, Calif., since August 2006. During her stay, she befriended Judy Sleeman, her roommate. They became very fast and endearing friends.
She was born in Grand Falls, Canada, in 1914, the daughter of Louise and Samuel Bird. She married William S. Doherty in 1938, and lived in Rumford. She moved to California, in 1980.
She loved her family and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her interests were her family, reading, playing bridge and cribbage before losing her eyesight and gardening, especially her peach and lemon trees and tomato plants.
Years ago when she resided at her summer residence at Roxbury Pond, she made her raised doughnuts for the church sale to raise money for the community. They came from miles to buy her doughnuts.
She is survived by sisters, Freda Sweet of Colchester, Conn., and Grace Lloyd of Yucaipa, Calif.; children and their spouses, daughter, Janice Hall Merriman and Denys Merriman of Calimesa, Calif., daughter, Patricia Lyons of Gardiner and daughter, Kathleen and Leo Grassette of Rumford and son, Robert Doherty of Sun City, Ariz.; grandchildren, Lori Grassette of Calimesa, Calif., who has been her best friend for years and a very loving granddaughter, Dawn Leclerc of Bath, N.H., Kelly Beard of Montgomery, Pa., Valerie Moore of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Tod Merriman of Yucaipa, Calif., and Lisa Deesing of Yucaipa, Calif.; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, William (Bill) Doherty in 1975; a son, Richard P. Doherty in 2002; loving sister, Elsie Farace in 2007; and a brother, Robert Bird in 2006.
