Already recognized as an All-American wrestler, Jon Smith may add another honor to his resume Friday night.

Smith is a finalist for the John Winkin Award, given annually to the outstanding high school baseball player in the state. The winner will be announced at Friday night’s Larry Mahaney Senior All-Star Classic at Husson College.

“It was very, very unexpected. I actually never saw it coming,” Smith said.

“It’s a very cool feeling to be up there with all of those great players.”

The switch-hitting senior shortstop/pitcher is one of four finalists for the award. Kyle Stilphen of Gardiner, Ian Edwards of Bangor and Demitrios Gatzogiannis of Wells are the other finalists.

“Jon had a great year defensively and he was a mainstay on offense for us as well,” Dirigo coach Dave Lafleur said.

Smith batted .340 for the Cougars this year with two homers, 17 RBIs, 17 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.

On the mound, he posted a 4-1 record with a 0.84 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings of work.

Smith will play for the West in the All-Star Game, which is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

He will be joined by Will Emerson Pat Bryant of St. Dom’s, Tyler Cobb and David Ricker of Winthrop, Monmouth’s Ronnie Hobson, Tom Edgecomb of Oak Hill, Jay’s Nick Bourassa, Maranacook’s Travis Harwood and Poland’s Jackie MacVane. Oxford Hills’ Ryan Yates, Lewiston’s Eddie West and Edward Little’s Kyle Bussiere will play for the East squad.
