FARMINGTON – Minot Mitchell Flagg Jr., 77, of Skowhegan, died Wednesday, June 25, at Edgewood Manor Nursing Home, Farmington.
He was born in Avon on June 5, 1931, son of Minot and Mabel Hinkley Flagg. Minot worked at the paper mill in Rumford for the Oxford Paper Co., Ethyl Corp., Boise Cascade and Mead, retiring after 35 years on May 21, 1993.
He served his community in many ways. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He was founder of the Webb River Valley Snowmobile Club. He held every office at one time or another and was secretary and representative to the State Snowmobile Association.
Minot spent many days camping and fishing with Gracie, the partner he was devoted to for 35 years. Grace Virgin Ellis passed away May 13, 2000.
He also enjoyed his ATV and hunting, including bagging a number of bear – One he got right in his backyard in Berry Mills where he lived with Joyce Demo Shaw, whom he married on July 11, 2001.
Minot was a selectman in 1974 and a budget committee member for S.H.A.R.E. bulk food purchasing program for community service volunteers in Franklin County. For many years he also volunteered his assistance at the quarterly Federal Surplus Food Department.
For more than 25 years (starting at the 1975 town meetings), Minot had been elected moderator for town meetings. In 1998 our state representative “clocked” the meeting at 32 minutes!
He and his wife, Joyce, moved to Skowhegan in 2005, where he immediately joined the Skowhegan-Madison BPOE.
He had been very active in high school sports, playing football, hockey, basketball and running track.
He will be greatly missed by his many friends in Carthage and the good friends he had while he was in Skowhegan.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Shaw Flagg; his two daughters, Sheila Flagg of Jay and Rose Cousins of Massachusetts; a sister, Beula Harven of Madison; a stepson, John Ellis of Carthage, to whom he was very close; many grandchildren, with a special closeness to his grandson, Martin (Samky) Flagg; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sons, Ashley and Robin.
