SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) – Police in South Portland say their use of a Taser immediately ended a standoff that had prompted a residential evacuation.

Officers had been dispatched to an area on Elm Street at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday night after a report that a truck had crashed into a residence and the driver had fled on foot.

Police say they made contact with the suspect inside an Elm Street residence, and allege that he threatened to blow up the officers and building.

The police say after 20 or 30 minutes, a perimeter officer in the rear of the residence confronted the suspect outside the building, where the suspect held a knife to his own chest.

According to the report, the officer subdued the suspect with a Taser and he was taken into custody.
