LEWISTON – Workers at WahlcoMetroflex were pretty pumped Tuesday.

Just after lunch, the company’s partners handed out $100 gas gift cards to every employee.

“We decided to do this about a week ago when we were talking about what we could do to give employees a little help to offset the cost of enjoying the holiday,” said Steve Boulet, director of administration. “With the price of gas, people were changing their minds about road trips and other plans. We thought this would help.”

The gift cards were handed out to all 150 employees, including some temps and new hires, Boulet said. Located at the Lewiston Industrial Park, WahlcoMetroflex makes industrial pollution control devices for clients around the world.

Business is booming: In 2007, it was named Maine’s Small Business Exporter of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration and received an economic achievement award from the Lewiston-Auburn Economic Growth Council.

“We think this might make a difference,” said Boulet of the gift cards and the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. “If people want to go camping, or other plans that involve travel, knowing they can fill up the tank to get them there and back might help.”
