LEWISTON – Fourteen local residents were among 440 graduates to receive bachelor’s degrees during the Bates College 142nd commencement exercises May 25.
Auburn
William L. Locke graduated with a bachelor of science degree in biology. He participated in the 2007 Bates Mount David Summit, an annual celebration of academic excellence. A 2004 graduate of Poland Regional High School, he is the son of William and Priscilla Locke.
Bethel
Katrina A. Boelsma graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in environmental studies. During fall 2006 she studied at University College in Dublin, Ireland. A 2004 graduate of Gould Academy, she is the daughter of Andy and Jeanne Boelsma.
Caitlin McElroy graduated with a bachelor of science degree in biology. She was a member of the women’s Nordic ski team for four years and was a competitor in the NCAA skiing championships. A 2003 graduate of Gould Academy, she is the daughter of Timothy McElroy of Williamsburg, Mass., and Karen McElroy.
John W. Reuter graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in environmental studies. A member of the Nordic ski team, he served as a junior adviser in 2005-06 and, during fall 2006, studied at the University of Iceland.
Reuter was a member of the Bates Scholar-Athlete Society and of Sigma Xi, a society for excellence in scientific research. A 2003 graduate of Telstar Regional High School, he is the son of James and Julia Reuter.
Bowdoin
William K. Jack graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. A participant in college clubs, he was a member of the extracurricular activities and residential life committee, the admissions and financial aid committee, the trustees’ advisory committee and the senior gift committee, as well as the student committee on committees.
He was involved in the Bates Campus Climate Project and the mock trial team, and was a four-year member of student government. From 2006 to 2008, Jack served as student body president and until his senior year worked as an admissions tour guide. He served as interim secretary, then chair of the student government.
He was the men’s indoor and outdoor track and field team manager during his years at Bates and was a senior admissions fellow in 2007-08. Jack was named an Arata Scholar in 2006. A 2004 graduate of Mt. Ararat High School, he is the son of Ron Jack and Jane Jack.
Brunswick
Michael B. Henry graduated with a bachelor of science degree in biological chemistry. A dean’s list student and 2004 graduate of Brunswick High School, he is the son of Mark and Rosemary Henry.
Lauren E. Lemieux graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish and political science. She studied in Granada, Spain, during the 2006-07 academic year. A 2004 graduate of Brunswick High School, she is the daughter of Dennis and Nancy Lemieux.
Farmington
Ronald J. DiGravio graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in American cultural studies. He was a member of the Bates football team, playing as a running back during his first year and a linebacker during his last three seasons. He received the Robert P. Schmidt Award for exemplary courage and achievement for the 2007 football season. A 2003 graduate of Carrabassett Valley Academy, he is the son of Ronald DiGravio and Maureen DiGravio.
Matthew H. Dunlap graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. He was a four-year member of the Nordic track team and the 2007-08 captain of the men’s cross country track team.
Dunlap was named an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Athlete. He placed fifth for the 8K race in the ECAC Division III cross country championships, and competed at the 2007 NCAA cross country championships. A 2004 graduate of Mt. Blue High School, he is the son of Douglas and Mary Dunlap.
Jacob R. Hardy graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. He was a member of the men’s alpine skiing team. A 2004 graduate of Mt. Blue High School, Hardy is the son of Duane and Carol Hardy.
Greene
Cassandra K. Kirkland graduated with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and physics. A dean’s list student and a member of Phi Beta Kappa as well as Sigma Xi, a society for excellence in scientific research, she was a provisional qualifier in the hammer throw for the 2008 WCAA Track and Field Championships, and was named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association’s Academic All-America team.
Kirkland was inducted into the Bates Scholar-Athlete Society and studied mathematics in Budapest, Hungary, during fall 2006. A 2004 graduate of Leavitt Area High School, she plans to complete a graduate degree in physics at Northeastern University. She is the daughter of Allan Kirkland and Kathryn Grefer-Kirkland.
Livermore
Emily E. Biliouris graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. A dean’s list student, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society, and of Sigma Xi, a society for excellence in scientific research. Biliouris also received a Hoffman Research Support Grant in 2006. A 2003 graduate of Livermore Falls High School, she is the daughter of William and Susan Biliouris.
New Gloucester
Peter N. Lobozzo graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in biology and environmental studies. A dean’s list student, he spent fall 2006 in Mexico. A 2003 graduated of Gray-New Gloucester High School, he is the son of Allan Lobozzo and Mary Gill Lobozzo.
Peru
Brett H. Hine graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in music. A dean’s list student, he was a member of the Christian Fellowship, the men’s tennis team and the Bates Musicians Alliance. Hine studied in China during fall 2006 and received the Willis Award in 2008 for excellence in biblical reading. A 2004 graduate of Mountain Valley High School, he is the son of William Hine II and Cathy Hazelton.
