STRATTON – The Dead River Area Historical Society will hold the annual Sam O. White Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13, hosted by Sam’s distant cousin, Emerson Dyer, and Sam’s friends, Bob and Sandra Shipper. Shipper went to Alaska to see White and they became good friends.

Last year the family shared stories and donated items to add to the Sam O. White exhibit, which Julia and Harland White loaned to the museum. Keith White donated the photograph album, Sam O. White Book 3.

Because handling Sam’s albums is not permitted, it has been scanned, printed and placed in an album that can be handled. Norman White loaned his album, Sam O. White Book 5, to be scanned and printed.

Julia White gave permission to scan the albums she loaned to the museum. They were scanned, printed and placed in an album that folks can look at. The original albums are in the display case. Robert Blake, also a member of Sam’s family, donated many photographs of Sam and his family.

White was born and raised on Eustis Ridge and after World War I, he moved to Alaska. He was the first bush pilot/game warden in the world. The book, “Sam O. White, Alaskan,” is available at Country Charm.

For more information, call 246-5871. Sam O. White Day is the second Sunday in July every year at the museum.

Also included in this year’s activities will be a food sale to benefit the handicapped access project. For more information, call Mary Henderson at 246-2271.
