BRUNSWICK – Wilfred J. Harrington, 69, of Bowdoin, went home peacefully to be with his Lord on Friday, June 27, at Mid Coast Senior Health Center, with his family at his side.
He was born in Topsham on March 17, 1939, a son of Ernest C. and Ruth M. Hazelton Harrington. He attended Brunswick High School and received his G.E.D.
He worked at Treworgy Furniture delivering and assembling furniture and appliances. He had also worked at Freeport Shoe for 15 years.
In the 1970s, he became a deputy sheriff for Sagadahoc County, where he worked as a full-time deputy. He served as Bowdoinham police chief for more than six years and also worked in communications for Topsham Police Department, from where he retired in 2004. He was a member of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association.
He enjoyed his family, genealogy, country music, especially Dick Curliss, going on road trips with his wife, Theresa, and holidays in keeping with the family traditions.
He attended the Lisbon Falls Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Theresa Poliquin Harrington of Bowdoin, whom he married on Aug. 20, 1960; two daughters, Joanne Campbell and her husband, Martin, of Lisbon Falls and Kathy Decker and her husband, James, of Bowdoin; two brothers, Ernest Harrington Jr. and his wife, Hilda, of Eastport and Melvin Harrington and his wife, Janelle, of Topsham; a sister, Sharon Jewett and her husband, Norman, of Bowdoin; eight grandchildren whom he cherished, Holly and Dan Aceto, Joshua Decker, Meghan Davis, Stefanie Decker and Kimberly, Kelley and Zachary Campbell; he will also be greatly missed by a special niece and nephew, Mike and Sheri Shorette and their daughters, Brenda and Pennie; and Bobby Decker, whom he thought of as a son and his wife, Amy and their children; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two infant sons, Mark and Wilfred J. Harrington Jr.; two brothers, Edwin Harrington and Leonard Harrington; and a sister, Jeannette Karkos.
