OTISFIELD – Former fire Chief G. Howard Dyer will be a guest of honor at the town’s Fourth of July parade Friday.
Dyer, 102, will be given a special seat of honor in the passenger side of the town’s new pumper firetruck, parade Chairwoman Pat Dyer Haggerty – Dyer’s niece – said Wednesday. Dyer is also the Boston Post Cane holder as Otisfield’s most-senior resident.
Dyer will be wearing a chief’s white helmet and his retirement badge and is looking forward to the ride, Haggerty said. “He’s all excited,” she said. Dyer served as chief for about four years in the 1930s. At the time the town’s primary fire equipment was a back-pack-type tank known as an “Indian Pump,” Haggerty said.
The driver of the truck will also be a former fire chief and Dyer’s nephew, Garry Dyer, 52, who is still active with the department, Haggerty said. Garry Dyer served as chief for 21 years in the 1980s and 1990s before stepping down.
Also honored Friday will be Barbara Kane, a former town clerk who served for 31 years, Haggerty said. Kane will be the parade’s grand marshal.
The parade starts at 10 a.m. from the south side of Otisfield Village at Spurr’s Corner on Route 121 and proceeds about a half-mile to the fire station.
