WELD – Road crews were making temporary repairs to severe washouts along Center Hill Road here and Avon Valley Road in Avon on Thursday.
A storm dropped several inches of rain in a short time Wednesday evening in those areas, washing out roads and culverts, according to reports Franklin County Emergency Management Director Tim Hardy received, he said.
The roads were impassable in some areas.
Hardy visited Weld on Thursday morning to assess the damage and take pictures to document it.
“According to what people told me, they received 5 inches of rain within 90 minutes,” Hardy said.
Town crews were making temporary repairs to make the road passable, he said.
He was told the temporary fix to Center Hill Road would cost anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000.
Weld Town Clerk Carol Cochran said three trucks were hauling gravel to fill in the washouts.
Some portions of the road were passable by noon and crews expected to have the rest temporarily fixed by the end of the day, she said.
A half-mile of Avon Valley Road, located off Route 4, was also washed out. A road crew had installed a temporary bridge and did other work to make the road passable, Hardy said.
