LEWISTON – FLY Football (Football League for Youth) will conduct its annual player and cheerleader registration for the upcoming season from 6 to 8 p.m. July 17 and 18 at Lewiston Mall.

All youth ages 8 to 13 are invited to participate as long as their 14th birthday falls after Oct. 31, 2008. Participants must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and provide a valid birth certificate for proof of age.

Cost for one child is $75. Each additional child is $25, up to a maximum of $115 per family.

Participants between the ages 6 and 7 will participate in a flag-based, seven-week instructional program. Ages 8 through 10 will compete in the Junior Division and ages 11-13 in the Senior Division.

FLY will play its games at Lewiston Athletic Park beginning Sunday, August 31, and concluding with the league all-star games Oct. 26.

Due to the generosity pf many area businesses and the City of Lewiston, FLY Football continues to teach the fundamentals of tackle football and cheerleading to the greater Lewiston-Auburn community. It provides an opportunity for youth to enjoy the game in a supervised, league setting while promoting the ideals of sportsmanship and physical fitness.

Mountain Valley lacrosse clinic

MEXICO – There will be a free lacrosse clinic for all boys in the SAD 43 school district. Clinic dates are July 8-10 and 16-17. The clinic is tentatively scheduled for the Mountain Valley Middle School football field from 4 to 6 p.m. each day.

Please bring a lacrosse stick and gloves if possible, although some will be available for players who do not own them. The clinic is for all current and future members of the Mountain Valley High School lacrosse program. Basic stick handling, offense and defense will be covered. FMI, call Jeff Gilbert at 364-7241.

UMF soccer camp

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington soccer camp focuses on fun and fundamentals. From beginners to the advanced, players will practice the basic techniques and tactics needed to progress to the next level of skill. Players will grouped according to ability.

This preseason session is scheduled for August 11-14 from 9 a.m. to noon at Prescott Field. Former UMF men’s soccer coach and standout student-athlete Jamie Beaudoin is the camp director. The staff will include high school and collegiate coaches and players.

All players entering grades 7 through 12 are welcome to participate. Cost is $65. Each players schould bring water, cleats, shin guards, soccer socks, appropriate clothing, rain gear and sunscreen. FMI, go to www.farmington.edu.

Scarborough Triathlon almost full in first year

SCARBOROUGH – Only a few spots remain available in the full field of 300 athletes that will compete in the first-ever Scarborough Triathlon on Saturday, July 13.

The sprint distance event will start from the state park beach and race along the coast and into the heart of Memorial Park, where the 350th Anniversary Celebration will be underway.

Beginning from Scarborough Beach State Park, athletes will embark on a 1/3-mile out-and-back ocean swim, followed by a 15-mile bike ride through Pleasant Hill neighborhood, along the coast, and over some of the most popular cycling roads in Portland (including Black Point, Sawyer, and Thorton Roads, Fickett Street, and Highland Avenue). The race will finish with a 3-mile, point-to-point run on the town’s newly-updated trail system, heading in at the Eastern Road access point and winding around Scarborough’s scenic marshes.

First-time athletes and seasoned pros will converge locally from Maine and the greater New England area, as well as from states in the Midwest, South, and even California to compete. Awards will be given to top three male and female overall winners as well as top three winners in each age and relay category. There will be no parking at Scarborough beach on race day. Morning parking will be available in the Camp Ketcha and Middle School lots with shuttles running back and forth for the duration of the race.

Winthrop Rec hoop camp still open

WINTHROP – The Winthrop Recreation Department reports that there are still openings in its Basketball Camp for boys and girls in Grades 3 to 8. The camp will take place at Winthrop Grade School gym from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, July 14 to Thursday, July 17. High school coaches Tyler Hunt (boys) and Ray Convery (girls) will lead this week of outstanding skill development and fun. If you are interested, call the Recreation Dept at 377-9686.
