OXFORD – It seems as if Ricky Rolfe can do no wrong in 2008.

The veteran from Albany Township claimed a pair of victories in the Oxford Networks Late Model division Thursday night at Oxford Plains Speedway. Rolfe took the lead from Paul Bosse on Lap 18 and held off defending champion Travis Adams on a late restart to claim his third straight feature win, then made it four in a row with another terrific run in the nightcap.

Adams challenged Rolfe on the outside for three laps but eventually settled for second, while 2004 champion Shawn Martin came from deep in the field to finish third. Billy Childs Jr. and Oxford veteran Timmy Brackett completed the top five in this makeup event from last Saturday’s rainout.

“Three in a row is pretty incredible,” said Rolfe in the winner’s circle. “Travis gave me quite a run there just past halfway, but he did it in a clean manner. The car was hooked up again tonight and I had the preferred line, so here we are again. It’s been a great season thus far for sure, now we need to run like this when it counts, on the 20th of this month.”

Finishing sixth through 10th in the first Late Model feature were Shawn Knight, Donnie Wentworth, Jimmy Childs and Carey Martin. Only two cautions slowed the pace, neither for a serious incident. Fourteen of the 23 starters finished on the lead lap, while Rolfe’s margin of victory was just over one second.

Tommy Tompkins and Adam Polvinen were also feature winners on Maine State Lottery Fireworks Night at the 3/8-mile paved oval.

In the second Late Model feature, Rolfe took the lead from Shawn Knight on Lap 29 and drove off to record his fourth straight victory. Knight battled side-by-side with Rolfe and even led two laps just past the halfway mark, but Rolfe would not be denied on this night.

Brackett, a former regular at Oxford Plains Speedway who now races at Beech Ridge, backed up his strong run in the first feature with a solid third place finish, while Carey Martin and Billy Childs Jr. completed the top five. Seventeen of the 24 starters finished on the lead lap, while Rolfe’s margin of victory was just over one and a half seconds.

“We were a little tight in the first race, we compensated for it and it helped but was still a little tight in the corners. Things continue to go well for us, I just hope I’m not peaking early and can carry this momentum into the 250.”

In earlier feature action, Polvinen dominated the 50-lap Mini Stock feature to earn his first victory of 2008. With just two brief cautions to slow the pace, the young athlete known affectionately as “The Flying Finn,” put a lot of good cars a lap down by halfway and kept up the pace to the finish. Shane Kaherl quietly snuck up to second at the finish, while Ashley Marshall was third. Darrell Moore and Steve Barker completed the top five in this extra-distance affair for the Mini Stock warriors.

Tompkins followed Polvinen’s performance with a convining win in a caution-free 50-lap Strictly Stock feature. The driver from Dixfield made it look easy, building a huge lead by half way and holding off all challengers. Larry Emerson drove from eighth on the grid to finish a distant second, while Auburn’s Mike Short was third.

Point leader Skip Tripp kept his nose clean and crossed the line in fourth, while Kim Tripp completed the top five. Only seven of the 17 starters finished on the lead lap, and Tompkin’s margin of victory was more than six-and-a-half seconds.
