RUMFORD – The second week of Rumford Public Library’s Summer Fest will begin on Monday, July 14, with Magic, Mime and Fun, presented by Charlie Who.
Charlie Who, the alter ego of Meroby Elementary School teacher Alan Tacheny, has captivated audiences in the past and will be joined this year by Seth, his special assistant.
Bitsy Ionta, also known as the Science Guy, will visit the library on Tuesday, July 15, with his repertoire of scientific activities and wonders. A retired teacher from the local school system, Ionta makes learning about science fun.
Learn about bees on Wednesday, July 16. Bee keeper Carol Cottrell will present a program about bees and beekeeping, complete with honey tasting. Cottrell is the only woman master bee keeper in the state.
On Thursday, July 17, the library will host Jay Bernard of the Maine Forest Service and his special friend, Smokey Bear. They will explain the importance of not playing with matches and lighters and of taking good care of animal friends who live in the forest.
At noon Friday, July 18, “Puppets at the Picnic” will take place with guest storyteller Michelle Boucher-Ladd, librarian at St. John’s School this past year.
She has fun stories to share with picnic-goers. Kids should bring lunch and picnic blankets and meet on the library’s back lawn. In the event of inclement conditions, they will move the picnic indoors.
There is still time to participate in the summer reading program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” which continues through July 26. Children interested in the program can get information about the program and the reading incentives by picking up a reading packet in the children’s room.
All programs are free and open to area children and their friends. The programs are held in the library’s public room at 3 p.m., with the exception of the Friday noontime picnic in the park.
