POLAND – A blown transformer was blamed for a power outage Tuesday that affected people on at least nine streets.

With temperatures still in the 80s late in the day, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputies were checking on several elderly people who live at Brookdale Village, concerned about those whose air conditioning had been knocked out during the outage.

No immediate health problems were reported.

A Central Maine Power Co. spokeswoman said a transformer blew at about 4 p.m., knocking out electricity to a handful of customers in Poland.

By 10 p.m., CMP crews were hauling a new transformer from Augusta and repairs were expected by midnight. It was not immediately clear what caused the transformer to blow.
