LEWISTON – Four high school graduates were recently awarded journalism scholarships in memory of former Sun Journal reporter and editor Lisa Giguere.
Matthew Daigle, 18, and Tanya Gagne, 17, both of Auburn, were named first-place winners and received $2,000 each. Tyler Noyes, 18, of Auburn and Nathan Andrew, 17, of Greene were runners-up and received $1,000 each.
“We received, this year, four very worthy applications,” said presenter Ralph Tuttle of Auburn, widower of Giguere, who died of lung cancer in 2004. Her career at the newspaper spanned 30 years.
The scholarship was established by Tuttle, in partnership with the Costello families, publishers of the Sun Journal. It is designed to identify promising young journalists and help them develop their talents. Graduating seniors from St. Dominic Regional High School, Lewiston High and Edward Little High schools are eligible to enter.
Gagne, 17, graduated 23rd in her class of 215 at Edward Little. She has been accepted at the University of Maine in Orono to major in journalism. She has served as news editor of the school paper, Latitude 44, was student representative to the Auburn School Committee her junior and senior years, was class president her freshman and sophomore years, and a member of the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Rod and Suzanne Boutot.
Daigle, 18, is a graduate of Edward Little and has been accepted into the University of Maine at Farmington’s creative writing program. He was ranked 30th in the class of 215. He served on the Advocate staff since 2003 and won the Johnny M. Robinson award twice. He was also arts and entertainment editor of the school newspaper, Latitude 44.
He is the son of Steven and Diane Daigle.
Andrew, 18, is a graduate of St. Dominics Regional High School in Auburn and has been accepted at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., where he will major in journalism and writing. He ranked 34th among the 71 graduates.
Andrew was involved in the Academic Advocate newspaper, drama, Amnesty International, lacrosse, soccer, baseball and varsity basketball, and he writes poetry. He is the son of Frederick and Maureen Andrew.
Noyes, 18, is a graduate of Edward Little and has been accepted at the University of Maine at Farmington to study journalism and writing. He graduated 61st in his class of 215. His school and community activities include writer and opinion editor for the school newspaper, Latitude 44, editor of EL’s literary magazine, Zenger, participant in Envirothon, vice president of the Outing Club, member of the Latin Club and trained volunteer with Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.
He is the son of Amy Noyes and Richard Noyes.
Giguere was born in 1951 in Lewiston, the daughter of Carmen and Romeo Giguere. She graduated from the University of Maine and was hired as a Lewiston Evening Journal reporter in 1974. She was on the original team of reporters appointed to the new Sunday Sun Journal in 1983 and was later promoted to Journal city editor, then managing editor. She was named business editor in 1994 and became a design and copy editor in 2000.
