AUBURN – Kenneth E. Merrow, 95, a resident of 125 Harvard St., Auburn, died Sunday afternoon, July 6, with his family by his side at Clover Manor Health Care, following a long illness.
He was born in Auburn, April 28, 1913, the son of Charles and Florence (Nelson) Merrow. He attended Auburn schools and was a 1931 graduate of Edward Little High School. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was wounded in St. Lo, France, and received our country’s Purple Heart.
Following the war, he was employed as a carpenter for Seltzer-Rydholm for 30 years, retiring in 1978.
During retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, skier and snowmobiler, who belonged to the Stoneham Snowmobile Club, and loved to spend time at his family camp at Stoneham, which he designed and built.
Ken was a lifetime member of VFW Post Frank W. Hulett and Emilien Hamann DAV Post 11 of Lewiston.
Survivors include his wife, the former Helen Deringis, whom he married April 15, 1939 of Auburn; one daughter, Lynda Dodge of Danvers, Mass.; one special daughter-in-law, Gayle McDevitt of Lewiston; two grandsons, Stephen Merrow of New York and Aric Merrow and his wife, Nicole of Orrington; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Allie Merrow. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, David Merrow, and a sister, Lois O’Hara Keith.
