JAY – School Committee members unanimously voted Thursday to appoint middle school physical education teacher Mike Methvin as the high school activities coordinator.
Methvin will be paid a $4,070 stipend for the part-time, five- to 15-hour-a-week position, Superintendent Robert Wall said Friday. Methvin has served as athletic director at the middle school, a position appointed annually, Wall said.
Three applications were received for the position and a hiring team, including high school Principal Joe Moore and middle school Principal Scott Albert, conducted the interviews. The team recommended Methvin to Wall, who placed the nomination before the school board.
School officials eliminated the position of high school assistant principal/athletic director in the current budget. That position was formerly held by Kenric Charles.
Wall said $11,000 was included in the budget for an activities coordinator and one “contest manager” per season for fall, winter and spring sports.
In other action Thursday, committee members voted to have asbestos abatement done on the ceiling of the elementary school cafeteria. The cost is $7,000 and will come out of a reserve account.
In other matters, the board gave final approval to a new attendance policy that combines three aspects of attendance and creates uniformity throughout the school system.
Committee members re-elected Mary Redmond-Luce as chairwoman and Tammy Dwinal-Shufelt as vice chairwoman.
They also signed leases for:
• technology equipment – $158,888, three-year, 3.8 percent fixed, for annual payment of $54,950;
• photocopiers and printers – $61,800, three-year, 3.8 percent fixed, for annual payment of $21,373;
• school bus – $70,000, five-year, 4.18 percent fixed, annual payment of $15,170.
