LEWISTON – Doug Brownrigg, 71, of Newfield, previous resident of Bridgton, Naples, South Portland and Old Orchard Beach, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 10, after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his family.
He was born Oct. 24, 1936, in Grand Lake Stream, the son of John William Brownrigg and Edith Cressida (Sprague) Brownrigg. Doug graduated from Farmington High School after going to the state track meet for the high jump.
He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono as a mechanical engineer, working in testing laboratories at Pratt & Whitney, Howell Laboratories, Dielectric, Southern Maine Energy Testing Laboratory, Fiber Materials and Intermat, as well as working at Maine State Housing Authority and as Windham town code enforcement officer. He also started and ran his own company, Design Research Laboratories, for a few years.
He was active in the Bridgton community as president of the Bridgton Local Jaycees, in the local Democratic committee, and acted in the local community theatre. He was in charge of the construction and building of the Saint Joseph Catholic Church on South High Street in Bridgton. While living in Old Orchard Beach and Bridgton, he attended many events that his children were involved in, including basketball, field hockey, marching band, track, football and soccer as well as family events that included cookouts at Woods Pond, trips down the Saco River, RV trips and family Christmas parties.
Known as Doug, Douga, Bro, Uncle Doug, Uncle Boss, Dad and Grampie, family, genealogy, and reading were his passions. He worked with hundreds of genealogy databases to record the family tree going back centuries. His big blue eyes and Irish nature were always a welcome sight at family functions.
He is survived by son, Chris (Kit) of Lewiston, his wife, Cathy and children, Casey and Parker; son, Kyle of Haverhill, Mass., his wife, Amy and children Abigail and Kaitlin; daughter, Kelly Fowler of Casco, her husband, David and children Sarah, Stephanie and Lucy; daughter, Karen Lepage of Bridgton, her husband, David and children Kayleigh, Nicholas and Cameron; daughter, Betsy Wadland of Framingham, Mass., her husband, Scott and children Jillian and Jocelyn; daughter, Katie Townsend of Lyman, her husband, Michael and children Zachery and Ryan; daughter, Heather Lessard of Saco, her husband, Michael and children Shauna, Morgan, Jack and Addison; brother, James Brownrigg of Lehigh, Fla.; sister, Cressida O’Brien of Auburn, Mass.; sister, Catherine Amero of Douglas, Mass.; ex-wife, Sherryl Porter of Lewiston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his beloved wife, Ola Blood Brownrigg.
