Portland – Ronald W. Haney Jr., 46, died peacefully on the morning of Thursday, July 10. A devoted partner, caring grandfather, father, son and an incomparable friend, he had a dramatic impact on all those around him. He was an extraordinarily giving, warm and friendly individual with a true appreciation of the outdoors, which was seen in his passion for his family camp on the Machias River in Garfield.
He was a person who gave so completely of himself that no one who knew him ever wanted for anything, whether it be companionship, understanding or a kind word.
He was predeceased in 1995 by his mother, Elisabeth, whom he loved very much. His birth father died in 1966, and he was raised by his stepfather, Ronald Jackson of Casco, who survives him and who Ron always saw as his dad, and his wife, Gail.
A graduate of Orange Park High School in Jacksonville, Fla., he spent much of his adult life working at Bath Iron Works. After receiving his degree in plumbing and heating from Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle, he went to work in that field.
He is survived by three sisters: Julie York and her husband, Bob, of Raymond; Heidi Murrell and her husband, Mike, of LaPlata, Mo.; and Shelly Jackson of Casco. He is also survived by two brothers: Phillip Jackson and his wife, Lucy, of Casco and Andrew Jackson and his wife, Michelle, of Raymond, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his lifelong partner, Debbie Mountain Haines, originally of Mapleton. Debbie and Ron shared a rare bond that is not seen in many relationships. He was devoted to Debbie utterly, and cared for her so completely that she spent every moment with him, assured of his love for her. His tenderness, care and devotion toward Debbie was so deep as to cause him to immediately become a part of Debbie’s family. In this Ron is survived by a sister-in-law, Donna Charrette and her husband, Pat, of Ashland and a brother-in-law, Dana Mountain and his wife, Shirley, of Sydney. Also two stepsons, Shaun Haines and his wife, Gaby, of Portland and Troy Haines and his partner, Shawna, of Mapleton as well as a stepdaughter, Bethany Haines and her partner, Larry White, of Buxton, and two grandchildren, Amber White and Troy Haines.
Playing with his grandson “little” Troy was one of the greatest joys of his life.
He was happiest when sharing experiences with all those he loved, but especially when in the arms of his loving partner, Debbie.
All those he has left behind will miss him dearly, and knowing a human being so loving and giving has been one of the greatest honors of all of our lives.
