Fifth-graders win poster contest
NORWAY – Six fifth-graders drew “terrific” tree posters and won a whole passel of prizes in the third annual “Trees Are Terrific” Arbor Day Poster Contest at Guy E. Rowe Elementary School.
“The kids were all excited” to learn who among them had won the contest, said Wes Wentworth, member of the contest sponsor, the Norway Tree Committee.
Every child in the class drew a poster – and as a result, the entire class was bused to Pizza Hut in Oxford for a celebration.
Each of five students with the best-drawn posters – Tyler Cameron, Eva Gabrielsen, Randi-Lyn Conley, Mary Bryce and Shannon Kriger – won more: book bags and gift certificates from Books ‘n Things; “Street Trees Rule” T-shirts from Hot Colors, baseball caps from Western Maine Public Safety Supply; bird feeders from Aubuchon Hardware; sneakers from New Balance; and gift samples from Fare Share Market. Student Katelyn Hall also won a gift certificate from Market Square Restaurant.
The tree committee and the town will plant more trees, many with metal grates, along the sidewalks of Main Street this summer, thanks to $14,000 in state grant funds earmarked for the work.
