FARMINGTON – The cost of parking illegally in a handicap space has risen from $100 to $200.

Selectmen had initially held off making a decision on the fine until they received more information. After getting it, they learned that the town’s ordinance was outdated.

Town Manager Richard Davis said Wednesday that state law sets the fine at not less than $200 nor more than $500.

The town may be stricter than state law on the low end, but cannot be less stringent, Davis said.

Selectmen also voted last week to hire Woodard & Curran, an engineering firm, for $41,234 to design a wastewater pumping system to replace failing 16- to 17-year-old screw pumps. The Temple Stream pumping station handles all business and residential wastewater on Wilton Road, also known as routes 2 and 4.

“We’re looking at installing a pumping system that is more economical and also maintenance will be about replacing parts,” Davis said, instead of pumps.

Replacing the screw pumps is estimated to cost $600,000 to $739,100, he said.

“We think we can replace them with a different system, a centrifugal system,” he said.

Selectmen also approved a land exchange between the town and Kevin and Judy Vining with the town getting a bigger lot behind Marvin’s Auto Body for the new pumping station and the Vinings getting a lot up closer to Wilton Road.

The board also approved an exchange of easements with Marvin and Lucille Coolidge for access to the new pumping station lot, Davis said.
