LEWISTON – “Dance,” a show of photographic images from the Bates Dance Festival, will open Monday, July 14, and remain on view until Aug. 9 at Chase Hall Gallery.
The images in “Dance” are the work of Arthur Fink, who has photographed dancers for almost two decades. He has spent the last three summers as a resident photographer at the Bates Dance Festival.
Fink captures the dancers warming up, taking class and rehearsing. “I document the work and energy that goes into dance, not just the final performance,” he explains in his new book, “Dance.”
“Being in the studio as dances are created, or even as dancers prepare themselves, feels like being in a delivery room as children are being born. Amidst pain or anguish, tempered with rhythm and support, and bolstered with faith, new life emerges. It’s physical, sometimes sensual, as well as being spiritual,” he says.
Fink has also followed tango dancers and break dancers around Portland, taking photos at the Portland Boxing Club (another kind of dance, he maintains). He also photographs other dance companies in New England.
His images are in the permanent collection of the Portland Museum of Art and in a number of private collections. Recently, his photographs were featured in a gallery show along with images by well-known dance photographer Lois Greenfield.
Visitors interested in meeting Fink at the show are welcome to call him at 615-5722.
Chase Hall Gallery is at 56 Campus Ave. It is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
