LEWISTON – Raymond E. Cornish, 78, of South Rumford Road, Rumford, died Sunday, July 13, at the Central Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Rumford, on Feb. 18, 1930, son of Basil and Meria (Cayer) Cornish Sr., and graduated from Stephens High School, Rumford, Class of 1948.
Ray worked as an auto mechanic for Israelson Motors on Spruce Street in Rumford and later for Rowe Ford in Farmington and Rumford until retirement.
He was a communicant of parish of the Holy Savior, St. Athanasius-St John Church in Rumford. He was formerly active in the Rumford Falls Aerie 1248, F.O.E. He enjoyed the outdoors especially camping, hunting and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed woodworking. He loved his family and trips to the coast with them and going to the Highland Games in New Hampshire. He enjoyed spending time with his daughter’s dog, “Sadie.”
He was married in West Peru, on March 21, 1948, to the former Ruth Austin, who died in Rumford on March 13, 2006.
Survivors include daughters, Linda Moriarty and her companion, Kevin Kohlstrom, of Hubbardston, Mass., and Donna Cornish of Rumford; grandsons, Dennis, Eric and Joshua; great-grandsons, Riley, Noah and Austin; brother, Basil Cornish of Rumford; sister, Dorothy Putnam of West Peru; daughter-in-law, Faye Cornish of Gorham, N.H.
He was predeceased by his wife; a son, Dennis Cornish; a great-grandson, Jacob Moriarty; and sister, Joyce Storer.
