WEST SUMNER – Sheri Fowler is having another sale on Saturday to help in funding the restoration of the historic Pleasant Pond Grange Hall.
The theme for the yard sale is: “Cats.”
Fowler has a love for old buildings and has made it her goal to acquire and restore historical landmarks. She has tried renting the building, holding suppers and other fundraisers, but she said, “The thing that really works in getting the funds I need is sales.”
She has held four successful sales this year and plans a craft fair for November. The funds they generate have been used for painting, foundation work, utilities and general upkeep. “It’s important to keep things from deteriorating,” Fowler said. “The main work that has been done was taking care of a mildew problem which came from the dirt cellar. Horses were once kept in the cellar while their owners were dancing on the second floor.”
Fowler says the West Sumner Grange is unique with a second floor balcony.
“Only four or five in the state have these porches,” Fowler said.
She hopes people coming on Saturday will bring stories about events they remember having taken place in the hall. Fowler is compiling a scrapbook of memories that might include auctions, graduation photographs, meetings, fundraisers, reunions, weddings, parties and dances, she said.
Available Saturday will be home-baked goods, catnip, night gowns, T-shirts, tote bags, cat books, cat statues and cat toy boxes, among other pet items.
Refreshments include hot dogs, drinks, sandwiches, and homemade pies. Cats from the local animal shelter in Norway will be visiting the sale and available for adoption.
