LEBANON, N.H. – Ethelyn “Effee” May (Ross) Kenney, 82, of Magalloway Plantation, passed away Tuesday, July 15, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Effee was born June 13, 1926, in Rangeley, a daughter of the late Hayden and Vesta (Nile) Ross.
“Nanny Kenney” was a homemaker who took care of her husband and five children, but also served as a caretaker to all who entered her home. She clothed, fed, housed and nurtured countless children, and she expressed her love with a kiss and hug whenever she met a friend, family member or one of her numerous “boyfriends” or “honeys.”
Her signature color was red and she enjoyed wearing her red hat and carrying her red purse. She was tall in stature and often joked of her large feet while reminiscing of her days as a bouncer in the 1940s. She had a passion for sewing and was well known for her hand-sewn quilts and for her trips to Berlin to shop at the Guardian Angel Thrift Store.
She also enjoyed meeting her friends and sharing stories at the annual Hunter’s Ball. She will be forever remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
She is survived by her loving husband, Herman Kenney of Magalloway Plantation; three daughters, Cheryl Lindsay of Bath, Donna Edwards and husband, Roy, of Magalloway Plantation and Geraldine Kenney and her sweetheart, Wilfred Lavallee, of Upton; two sisters, Methelyn Hanscom of Jay and Clydiss Henderson of Dixfield; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents; her son, Herman Kenney Jr.; a daughter, Caroline Heath; two brothers, Joseph Ross and Reynold Ross; and two sisters, Ardis Thompson and Luelene McKenna.
