Dear Sun Spots: My request is urgent. I’m looking for information on Harvey G. Bennett. His parents and family were from this area. His era was 1844-1918. His wife was Sarah Amey. His children were John, Ferdinand, Addie, Jessie M. and Samuel. John’s child F. Harvey is my father and his first wife was Pearl G. Strout. I am looking to find anything about this family as my life expectancy is shorter now. Harvey G. lived with the Ziba Durkee family for a time. Other links were Annie Heath and Abby Swan and an uncle of my dad lived in St. John’s East, Canada. Thank you to all those who are trying to help. Everyone has suggested Sun Spots would be my best avenue for help. – Eleanor Bennett Collins, Bethel.

Dear Sun Spots: I want to express my immense gratitude to Milt Simon and the Auburn Community Band for their support of the American Red Cross by presenting us with the opportunity to speak at the band concert on Wednesday, July 2, at Festival Plaza in Auburn. I was thrilled to be able to share with members of the community my pride in what our local American Red Cross of Southern Maine, United Valley Chapter, does to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies, from the flooding in Fort Kent this past spring to assistance for single-family fires here in Lewiston-Auburn.

It costs our chapter $515 a day, every day, to assist members of the community with their emergency needs following a disaster and we need to raise that money locally because we are not financially supported either by any government funding or by our national office for these events.

For many years, the Auburn Community Band has provided members of the American Red Cross of Southern Maine – United Valley Disaster Action Team – the chance to circulate through the large crowd of listeners that are present to solicit contributions with American Red Cross emblazoned buckets. The July 2 total contribution of $500 is the largest ever, and there was such a marvelous show of support for what we do from our friends and neighbors. This will help us to provide food, replacement clothing and a hotel stay for some of the many individuals and families that we help every day. Thank you Milt and the other wonderful members of the Auburn Community Band for once again helping us help others! With heartfelt thanks. – Judy Emch, marketing specialist, American Red Cross of Southern Maine – United Valley Chapter.
