I was surprised and delighted to read the article about the Rural Community Action Ministry working in Greene (photo and story printed July 16). Since returning to Maine 15 years ago, I have often wondered if the RCAM was still around and helping the people in the areas around Lewiston-Auburn.

More than 20 years ago, when my wife and I were students at Bates College and members of the Bates Christian Fellowship, we organized a group of students to spend spring break doing a work project with RCAM. We had a wonderful time working on a couple of houses that week. In the spring of 1985, after my wife had graduated and I was finishing up at Bates, another group of students volunteered their time for RCAM again (I was preparing to move to Texas to start medical school during that break), but I know my friends from the BCF enjoyed the time they spent working with RCAM.

I do not know if the students at Bates College have continued to offer their help, but if they do I am sure they all will find the time as rewarding as I did many years ago. It is heart-warming to read stories of people helping others in this community, and especially so to realize that a group such as RCAM is still here, working to make a difference for as many people as it can.
