Residents in Western Maine and New Hampshire could see flash flooding Monday as heavy rains moved across the mountains Sunday night into Monday morning, dumping up to two to three inches of water in a short period of time.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for six counties – including Oxford, Franklin and Somerset counties in Maine and Carroll, Coos and Grafton counties in New Hampshire. The watch remains in effect until Monday night.
After a storm passed through Lewiston Sunday night, several streets were without power. Crews were working to repair a substation problem, acccording to a Central Maine Power recorded message .
As of Sunday night, mountainous areas of New Hampshire had already seen two inches of rain in some areas, according to Jim Hayes, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray.
“The terrain (in the mountains) is much more affected because water tends to run off quicker in those areas,” Hayes said. He said flooding would likely be in low-lying areas.
And streets and basements. The weather service is not expecting major waterways to reach flood level.
