Last week of library summer fest program
RUMFORD – The Rumford Public Library has been abuzz with activity since the start of the summer fest program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” and the fun will continue into the third and final week on Monday, July 21.
Barbara Gail of the Rhythm Inlet will appear at 3 p.m. with her World of Drums program. During her presentation last year participants learned about and played a variety of exotic and interesting boomers, bangers, clangers, shakers, scrapers, dingers and dongers (aka rhythm instruments) from all over the world.
Jim Nutting of the Butterfly and Insect Museum will be a special guest on Tuesday, July 22. He is a bug enthusiast with a personal collection of thousands of live and mounted insects and has an extensive knowledge of the specimens.
Nutting has done many presentations in schools and libraries. He lives in Auburn and is co-owner of Maine Art Glass Studio in Lisbon Falls.
On Wednesday, July 23, Elaine Michaud, Mountain Valley Middle School teacher, will play her guitar and lead in singing children’s songs. Some of the songs will be old favorites, but others, while the tune is familiar, will have new lyrics, adapted especially for the Catch the Reading Bug theme.
Thursday, July 24, will be “Fun Day!” at the library. Many volunteers will work together to create a fun-filled time for the youngsters.
Children can take part in games, test their fancy foot-work skills against the DDR machine, get their faces painted or watch as a balloon animal is being made for them, while munching on cotton candy or popcorn.
Addy Fuller will be a guest on Friday, July 25, for the Picnic in the Park. Over the past few years, Fuller and her mom, Kim, have done picnic programs together, but this year, Fuller is presenting solo. Bring a lunch and picnic blanket.
It is the final week to participate in the summer reading program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” which will conclude on Saturday, July 26. Children interested in the reading program can get more information by picking up a reading packet in the children’s room.
All programs are free and open to all area children and their friends. Parents and other caregivers are welcome to attend and are encouraged to accompany younger children. The programs are held in the library’s public room at 3 p.m., with the exception of the Friday noontime picnic in the park.
