Winthrop – Lucille P. Roberts, 93, died peacefully at her home on July 20, after a brief illness.
She was born in Winthrop on Jan. 12, 1915, the daughter of Carroll and Edith (Benson) Perry.
She graduated from Winthrop High School in 1933, and married Carleton Roberts, her childhood sweetheart, on June 30, that same year.
She was an avid outdoorswoman, known to many as “Lead Line Lucy,” who passionately enjoyed hunting and fishing in the north Maine woods. In August of 2007, she took her final trip to her camp at Northeast Carry, Moosehead Lake, a place that will always hold a piece of her for those who shared her love of the outdoors. She enjoyed playing cards and was always up for a fierce game of cribbage it was a rare accomplishment to beat her. She also loved all sports, especially women’s basketball.
She was an inspiration to so many, sharing her belief that anyone was capable of whatever they put their mind to. She was fearless and lived life to its fullest.
She was blessed by countless rich relationships with family and friends of all ages, spanning at least six generations. She was the “keeper of the memories,” for not only her generation, but for many generations before and after hers. For over 78 years, from the time she was 15 years old, she faithfully recorded daily life in her diary, leaving a wonderful, loving legacy to her family and friends.
She was a life member of the Abenaki Chapter O.E.S and the Rebekkahs.
She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her son, Terry Roberts and his wife, Janice, of Winthrop and Southport; her grandchildren, Lynn Roberts Reed and her husband, Steve, of Winthrop, Leon Roberts and his companion, Kimberly Clendenning, of Winthrop and Valerie Starkie and her husband, Mike, of Winterville, N.C.; her great-grandchildren, Jada Lucille Poulin Reed and her companion, Jeremy Clark, of Readfield, Ryan Roberts Reed, of Winthrop, Marissa and Malori Starkie, of Winterville, N.C.; her sister, Patricia Woolston, of Winthrop; her sister-in-law, Ruth Perry, of Winthrop; several nieces and nephews and many cherished friends and extended family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Carleton, in 1992; her sister, Louise, is 2005; and her brother, Leland Alfred “Buster” Perry in 2006. She was also predeceased by one brother and three sisters earlier in life.
