NORWAY – Melverda Robbins Jones Churchill, 98, of Norway died Sunday, July 20, at Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center.
She was born in Norway, Nov. 18, 1909, the daughter of Herbert Arthur and Jennie Moore Robbins. She graduated from Norway High School and lived in Norway all of her life.
She had done office work for the superintendent of Norway High School, Patridge Law Office, Phil Welch, George Hill, Norway Water District, Twin Town Chevrolet and retired from Norway Savings Bank on May 1, 1972 after 25 years.
She was an avid golfer before losing her eyesight. She was a member of the Norway Country Club for more than 40 years, where she served on the board of directors. She was a past president of the Women’s Association of the Norway Country Club, a charter member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Norway and had taken courses through the American Institute of Banking. She had also served as secretary of the Women’s Association of Maine Savings Banks.
She married Willard M. Jones on Oct. 14, 1937, and he died Dec. 19, 1962. She later married Harold Leo Churchill on Nov. 8, 1969, and he died Sept. 30, 1996.
She is survived by two sisters, Marita L. Hunton of Norway and Gwendolyn M. Hatt of Kingston, Nova Scotia, Canada; a brother, Arthur M. Robbins of Norway; a stepdaughter, Christine Hanscom and her husband, Rodney Hanscom Jr.; and two step-grandchildren, Stephanie Bragdon and Ronald Hanscom.
She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Claire Alexander of Auburn and Thelma P. Beck of Livermore Falls; a brother, Shirley Andrew Robbins of Lady Lake, Fla.; and an infant brother, Neil Robbins.
