BANGOR (AP) – A black bear had to be shot and killed over the weekend after it wandered into a Bangor neighborhood, giving residents a surprise if a not a shock.
A game warden was dispatched to a neighborhood a few blocks from the Bangor municipal golf course on Saturday morning after police were flooded with calls about a bear wandering the streets.
By the time Warden Jim Fahey arrived, a large crowd had gathered to see what the wound-up bear would do.
In the interest of public safety, Fahey shot and killed the bear, which was estimated at 150 pounds.
Maine Warden Service Sgt. Chris Simmons said moose and deer are often seen in Bangor, but he couldn’t remember the last bear sighting in a populated area of the city.
