Harry Dyer, 45, of Newfield was hauling a load of wood from Auburn to Verso Paper in Jay when he could see a little bit of smoke in the truck about noon Tuesday on Crash Road in Jay. “I thought it was my brakes,” said Dyer, driving for M.H. Humphrey out of Parsonsfield. When he opened the hood, there was fire, he said. “We could see smoke when went across the bridge,” Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Rick Duguay said. Flames were shooting 10 to 15 feet in the air but the wood didn’t catch fire, Duguay said. Thirteen firefighters responded with two engines and had the fire out quickly, Deputy Chief Jim Shink said. The Peterbilt cab of the truck was destroyed, he said. Livermore and Jay firefighters and fire-police stopped traffic on the road for about 30 minutes at each end.
