DIXFIELD – Selectmen, Town Manager Tom Richmond and town lawyer Lee Bragg met in a 90-minute closed-door session Monday afternoon to discuss a personnel matter.
Richmond declined to comment on the subject of the session, although it was believed to concern the June 30 termination of police Chief Richard Pickett over comments he made at a town meeting in May.
Bragg, from the Portland and Augusta law firm of Bernstein and Shur, has been representing the town since Pickett was fired.
Pickett said Tuesday afternoon that he and his lawyer, Phil Coffin of the Portland firm of Lambert Coffin, have not decided whether to bring suit against the town for wrongful termination.
“The ball is in their court,” Pickett said.
Coffin said earlier this month that a decision on possible litigation against the town would be made by early August. Coffin and Bragg have discussed the case. Pickett said Tuesday that he may hear from his attorney within the next day or two.
Three selectmen voted not to renew Pickett’s contract after he made comments at the May 22 town meeting that were considered insubordinate. Selectmen Norine Clarke and Brad Dyer voted against the termination.
Pickett, a retired Maine state trooper and detective, was police chief for 10 years.
Since soon after Pickett’s termination, Sgt. Jeff Howe began serving as interim police chief. Full-time coverage of the town has been maintained by officers Eric Bernier and Chuck Beale with the help of reserve officers.
Pickett said since his termination that he wants to get his job back.
