OXFORD – A Buckfield man who was struck by a car while walking on Route 26 on Sunday night remains in critical condition at a Lewiston hospital while Oxford police continue their investigation.
Larry Sanipas, 49, of Buckfield, was struck and left on the roadside Sunday night by a man who police are only identifying as being from Maine.
Sanipas was walking north along the highway in a heavy rainstorm between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. after attending the TD Banknorth 250 at the Oxford Plains Speedway on Route 26, Oxford police Sgt. Rickie Jack said Wednesday.
The investigator and the district attorney will meet to discuss what charges will be levied against the driver and release his name after he is charged.
The driver turned himself in to police on Monday and is described as being cooperative.
Jack said Sanipas is being treated for neck, head and chest injuries after a pedestrian found him about midnight lying in a ditch by the Oxford highway garage.
“As hard as it was raining I believe by morning, and by that I mean daylight, he would have died of hypothermia,” said Jack on Wednesday afternoon.
A nursing supervisor said as of 9:30 p.m. his condition remained critical.
