Hooray for the Sun Journal editorial July 14. Walgreens will soon be in every Maine community, except Auburn.
The store’s fate is being determined by a handful of disgruntled residents, city officials and the city’s engineering department. They are concerned about eliminating a left turn located within a failed intersection that is causing traffic jams and is considered dangerous, according to state standards.
Walgreens has generously offered to upgrade the intersection to a safer avenue for thousands of daily commuters, at its cost, with no TIFs or costs to the city.
Walgreens will also bring immediate tax revenue to a city that may soon lose a store located in the Auburn Mall that recently announced it is filing Chapter 11. And I hope city officials are anticipating the loss of future tax revenue when perhaps many landlords give up multi-family buildings during the coming winter when they can’t afford to heat them, along with some other businesses that will choose to close doors due to the declining economy.
Great job, Auburn – a city that has made such great strides in raising taxes over and over again, year after year. Let’s make it known to all that the city doesn’t need new businesses locating here, especially a thriving one such as Walgreens.
