NEW YORK (AP) – Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown turned in his fastest workout Saturday since returning to training after his puzzling last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes.
The colt breezed six furlongs in 1:10.86 under exercise rider Michelle Nevin at Aqueduct.
“Every work since he’s come back has been better than the one before it,” said Michael Sherack, vice president of IEAH Stables, which co-owns Big Brown with Paul Pompa Jr.
“From everything we’ve been told, from (trainer) Rick (Dutrow), Michelle, the clockers, it was an exceptional move. Michelle didn’t ask him for much of anything and he finished up strong and galloped out strong.”
Big Brown is scheduled to return to racing Aug. 3 in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth.
Sherack said Dutrow plans to send the colt to the Jersey shore a couple days before the race.
Big Brown also remains on track for a possible start in the $1 million Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 23.
“Sunday’s race will determine what happens,” Sherack said, referring to the Haskell.
Big Brown was pulled up in the Belmont in his failed quest to become racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner.
