I read the article by Mark LaFlamme (July 23) regarding the Sabattus school budget. From reading the article, one would get the impression that the only people opposing the budget are retired. That is certainly not the case.
Not only am I not retired, but I also have a child attending Sabattus Central School.
I believe the vote shows a majority in the community want the school system to take responsibility for its spending.
After the first vote rejected the budget, the school board came back to a special town meeting with a budget with $20,000 added. How did board members think people would respond?
They said it was to cover the increase of fuel. Did they not know, going into the first town meeting, that fuel was on the rise? The rest of us certainly did.
The school committee keeps whining about how they did cut their budget; how it is less than last year and has no tax impact.
I reply, rubbish!
Everything, in one way or another, has a tax impact, whether it be local, state or federal, the money comes from taxpayers.
I encourage all Sabattus residents (make that, I challenge residents) to attend every school board and budget meeting. Then, when they are standing up there and say how come folks didn’t attend the meetings (as if that gives them carte blanche) people can all say in unison, we did, and you didn’t listen.
Mara-Beth S. Duncan, Sabattus
