WESTBROOK – Timeless jazz standards will be front and center in Reindeer Theatre Company’s upcoming musical revue, “Kids on Jazz,” the first two weekends in August at Warren Memorial Library Auditorium.

“Kids on Jazz” is designed to showcase young performers in a unique and challenging genre. Think “pop star” instead of “actor,” said RTC Director Louis Philippe, who created the show more than a decade ago.

The kids are put in a very different spotlight, explained Philippe. Rather than memorizing scripts, blocking and characters, the singers must rely totally on their charisma, improvisational skills and their ability to engage the audience in one-on-one banter and sell a song.

“Unlike a typical play where actors blend into a scene or ensemble, the task of this production is for each singer to find their strengths and comfort level as solo artists and to develop an ensemble of individual stars – to create of cast of divas, if you will,” Philippe said.

“Kids on Jazz” features nine young singers from the Portland area, collectively known as The Swinging Sisters of Reindeerland, presenting their jazzy interpretations of popular standards, show tunes, movie classics and Broadway songs.

The show opens Friday, Aug. 1 and runs through Aug. 10. Friday and Saturdays shows are at 7 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and kids under 18. Warren Memorial Library Auditorium is at 479 Main St.
