FREEPORT – Members of the Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour will bring a scientific extravaganza, circus-style to town Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 4-5.

It’s wacky, weird science – a spectacle of science called Smirkusology. The story revolves around an innovative team of quirky, crackerjack scientists, attempting to formulate the chemical compound of circus. The result is a rousing celebration, chock-full of invention and suspension, gadgets and gizmos and the infinite magic of circus.

Audiences will be delighted to see a local performer among the Smirkus Troupers under the Big Top this summer. Jared Mongeau, a 15-year-old from Cumberland, has had a passion for clowning, juggling and performing arts since age 6. He attended Circus Smirkus’ summer camp for the past four years and was selected for its Advanced Camp Road Show last summer.

Mongeau has also been active in the local theater scene and has been in plays at The Portland Stage Company, Lyric Music Theater, Portland Players, Winter Harbor Theater Company and The Children’s Theatre of Maine and is currently in a small Musical Theater Ensemble directed by Rhonda Carlson. He has taken juggling, mime and clowning workshops with Maine talents Michael Lane Trautman, Sam Kilborn, Julie Goell and Amanda Huotari. He enjoys playing music, especially rock, blues and jazz on the drums, and making movies with friends.

Shows are at 1 and 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 4-5, at Merriconeag Waldorf School, 57 Desert Road. Tickets are available at Royal River Natural Foods in Freeport. Visit smirkus.org or call 1-877-SMIRKUS(764-7587) for credit card orders. For more information, contact Merriconeag Waldorf School at 865-3900, ext. 167.
