Auburn – Bridget Durkin Stankus, 89, of Lewiston, died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 2, at The Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, with her family by her side.
She was born in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland, on Feb. 2, 1919, a daughter of Mary and Thomas Durkin. She lived in London during World War II, where she worked as a seamstress sewing parachutes for the war. During this time she met and married her loving husband, Joseph Stankus, in London, England, on June 10, 1944. After the war, Bridget immigrated to the united States and lived in Chicago, Ill., for 36 years where she raised her family. Bridget, her husband and sister, Mary Durkin, later retired to Lewiston, in 1982.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Joseph, of Lewiston; a sister, Mary Ellen Durkin of Lewiston; a daughter, Maureen LaChapelle and her husband, Roger, of Lewiston; two sons, Brian Stankus and his wife, Denise, of Burlington, Wisc., and Michael Stankus and his wife, Wendy, of Beverly Farms, Mass.; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer LaChapelle Renna and her husband, Kevin, of Beverly Mass., Katie LaChapelle of Columbus Ohio, Megan Stankus of Chicago, Ill., Mary Stankus of Burlington, Wisc., Brianne Stankus of Burlington, Wisc., Elizabeth Stankus of Beverly Farms, Mass., Caroline Stankus of Beverly Farms, Mass., Krista Stankus of Burlington, Wisc., Ryan Stankus of Burlington, Wisc., and Joshua Stankus of Burlington, Wisc.; one great-grandson, Gavin Renna of Beverly, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; and six brothers and sisters in Ireland.
Bridget’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Androscoggin Home Care and the Hospice House for their excellent care and compassion for Bridget during her final days.
